Blackwood Cottage - Mental Health Nursing Home

Blackwood Cottage provides a 24 hour nursing service to those people over 65 years of age who have significant disability and often behavioural challenges associated with their mental illness or dementia.

The focus of care is to develop strategies to address the needs of the resident in relation to their behavioural challenges with a view to returning the resident to a nursing home closer to their own community and friends.

Prospective residents must have both an assessment and approval for admission from the Aged Psychiatry Team plus a current aged care assessment on an "Aged Care Client Record" form (commonly referred to as a "3020") undertaken by an aged care assessment service (ACAS). The aged client record form must identify the need for high care and be less than 12 months old.

All clients (or their legally appointed representative) are required to enter into a legal agreement for care prior to admission. We are happy to provide prospective clients or their legally appointed representative with a copy of the legal agreement in advance of admission so that they have an opportunity to seek legal advice.

Fees are applicable. All prospective residents must undertake an assessment by Centrelink.

The focus of care following admission is on quality of life, assistance to particpate in activities of daily living, enjoyment of their hobbies and general interests and reducing challenging behaviours.

All accommodation is in single rooms with ensuites. Forty percent of rooms have a shared ensuites.

We are happy to provide prospective cleints and or their carers with a tour of the facilities. This can be arranged by phoning the Chief Nursing Officer - Residential Care on (03) 5728 0200
